Sustainability
Snapshot
As a South Australian, family-owned and operated company, we value our connection to the local community and care about the environment we all share.
From collecting rainwater off the factory roof to reusing wooden pallets, resource responsibility has been our second nature since we began the company more than 30 years ago.
The onset of climate change has brought the importance of these simple actions into focus and called for us to find more ways to foster a circular economy.
From raising our recycled content from 20% to 30% by 2027 to partnering with academia to design products that can accommodate extreme weather events, we’re committed to setting an example in sustainability.
1
Recycled Raw Materials
BEST’s increasing use of locally sourced recycled inputs, such as consumer glass, in its raw materials reduces emissions, landfill and the need to mine and quarry. Looking forward, BEST hopes to use green cement, made from industrial waste using renewable energy sources, further reducing its environmental footprint.
2
Sustainable Design
BEST prides itself on creating products that support the health of the natural environment. In collaboration with the University of South Australia, BEST has developed a permeable paver range, specifically for Adelaide soils and storm conditions, that can reduce flooding and erosion and alleviate strain on stormwater systems.
3
Energy-Efficient Production
50% of BEST’s production occurs during off-peak energy times, when renewable energy production is at its peak, alleviating stress on the energy grid. South Australia already generates more than 70% of its electricity from renewable sources and has a target of 100% net renewable energy by 2027.
4
Low Emission Curing
Unlike its competitors, BEST does not use natural gas to set its products; instead, it opts for a mist-curing process, utilising rainwater harvested from factory roofs and recycled water. The result is significantly lower energy use, greenhouse emissions, and a far superior end-product.
5
Water-Conscious Finishing
In a state where droughts are increasingly becoming the norm, BEST takes every drop seriously. Honing, the process of polishing pavers to reveal their distinct texture is traditionally water-intensive. Best employs a closed-loop system, harvesting and recycling water onsite, reducing reliance on municipal water and saving 5,000 litres per day on average.
6
Benefits of Buying Local
As a local, Adelaide-based business, greenhouse emissions from transport and delivery are minimised. BEST also reuses all wooden pallets and offers account customers a free collection service. Lastly, take comfort that all BEST products are 100% recyclable, so they should never find their way into landfill.
